	<p>Meeting point for innovation and sustainability: The LUX - Pavilion of Mainz University of Applied Sciences, Ludwigstrasse 2 in Mainz is showcase for ongoing and planned research projects that offer exciting insights and innovative approaches to the sustainable construction and operation of real estate and infrastructure. The Department of Civil Environmental Engineering presents from October 31 till November 8, 2024 research projects in this exhibition and offers a diverse program of events that highlights future-oriented developments in the real estate and infrastructure sectors.</p>
<p>The action week “BAU meets LUX” focuses on the topics of “Sustainable construction and operation of real estate and infrastructure”. The title of the accompanying exhibition, FINBAU 2024 - Research Initiative for Sustainable Construction, is more than just a motto - it symbolizes the university's commitment to an environmentally friendly future. The exchange with practice, politics and science should send a strong signal for sustainability in the construction and infrastructure sector.</p>

	<p>The project idea combines the natural building material bamboo, which has a fast growth rate and an excellent carbon dioxide storage capacity, with a prefabricated construction in a sustainable product. Through the cooperative development of a prefabricated and demountable connection, previous research results on round wood are transferred to the material bamboo. The prefabricated part of the connection also enables outdoor use, e.g. for load-bearing structures. The high degree of prefabrication of our material-appropriate connection technology enables worldwide use, even in structurally weak regions.</p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">Innovation inspired by nature: </span>Our innovative technology for the renewable raw material bamboo creates another piece for achieving the climate policy goals of the construction industry on the way to carbon neutrality and material transition. We would like to thank our project partner MFSA for their continuous and long-standing support over the past ten years. And yes, we are happy that we have caught the fish together in a few minutes.</p>

<p>In July 2023, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) published the DATIpilot funding programme. The DATIpilot aims to simplify and accelerate funding processes. Additionally, it serves as a field for experimentation and provides learnings and ideas for the German Agency for Transfer and Innovation (DATI), which is currently being set up. A total of 300 Innovation Sprints are being funded. At the DATIpilot roadshow between November 2023 and February 2024, nearly 600 projects presented their ideas in five-minute pitches. At each of the 23 events, the participants themselves peer-voted which projects should receive funding. In this way, 153 Innovation Sprints have been funded.</p>

	<p>In the spirit of practice-oriented teaching, the <a href="https://holzbauforschung-mainz.de/our-team/schober/">Chair of Timber Engineering and Building Construction</a> at <a href="https://www.hs-mainz.de/en/">Mainz University of Applied Sciences</a>, and <a href="https://www.rothoblaas.de/">Rothoblaas srl</a> offered a practical workshop on connection technology in multi-storey timber construction for students. In the first part of the workshop, the students of the Timber Construction class in the <a href="https://www.hs-mainz.de/en/academics/degree-programs/engineering/civil-engineering-renovation-meng/overview/">Master's degree program in Civil Engineering</a> were informed about the current status of the development of various connection solutions in timber engineering, especially in the field of mass timber buildings by Jonathan Fries. They were then able to see for themselves how easy the SPIDER connector is to install. <a href="https://holzbauforschung-mainz.de/our-team/bender/">Tom Bender</a> and <a href="https://holzbauforschung-mainz.de/our-team/pinger/">Christian Pinger</a>, research associates at <a href="https://holzbauforschung-mainz.de">Holzbauforschung Mainz</a>, prepared a cross-laminated timber ceiling element, produced by <a href="https://www.eugen-decker.de/en/">Eugen Decker Holzbau KG</a>, Morbach, Rhineland-Palatinate, using a hand-held CNC router so that the students could install the SPIDER in the correct position with form-fit.</p>

<p class="tw-data-text tw-text-large tw-ta" dir="ltr" style="text-align: justify;" data-placeholder="Übersetzung" aria-label="Übersetzter Text" data-ved="2ahUKEwiey8uAwYqFAxXwgf0HHRjKDhMQ3ewLegQIARAT">The design impresses with its simplicity and high spatial quality. With a simple slat profile, an atmospherically dense interior is created, which is constructed entirely in wood. Later degradability and thus a closed material cycle contribute to the sensible use of the resources used.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 16px;">The project, which exemplifies the possibilities and potentials of timber construction, was created in an interdisciplinary project in timber  design and construction in cooperation with the <a href="https://www.mpip-mainz.mpg.de/en/landfester">Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research</a> (Department Physical Chemistry of Polymers, Prof. Katharina Landfester), </span><span style="font-size: 16px;">in which students of architecture and civil engineering took part under the supervision of <a href="https://www.hs-mainz.de/en/directory/gero-quasten/">Prof. Gero Quasten</a> (Department of Architecture, Chair of Design and Energy-Optimized Construction) and <a href="https://www.hs-mainz.de/en/directory/kay-uwe-schober/">Prof. Kay-Uwe Schober</a> (Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Chair of Timber Engineering and Building Construction). </span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 16px;">The task was to design a station for the Polymer Path, which imparts knowledge about the history, use and properties of polymers and also includes artistic objects. </span><span style="font-size: 16px;">The project was funded by the Mainz University of Applied Sciences, the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research and the Mainz Science Alliance and can be visited on the Polymer Path parallel to Koblenzer Straße in Mainz.</span></p>
