	<p>Meeting point for innovation and sustainability: The LUX - Pavilion of Mainz University of Applied Sciences, Ludwigstrasse 2 in Mainz is showcase for ongoing and planned research projects that offer exciting insights and innovative approaches to the sustainable construction and operation of real estate and infrastructure. The Department of Civil Environmental Engineering presents from October 31 till November 8, 2024 research projects in this exhibition and offers a diverse program of events that highlights future-oriented developments in the real estate and infrastructure sectors.</p>
<p>The action week “BAU meets LUX” focuses on the topics of “Sustainable construction and operation of real estate and infrastructure”. The title of the accompanying exhibition, FINBAU 2024 - Research Initiative for Sustainable Construction, is more than just a motto - it symbolizes the university's commitment to an environmentally friendly future. The exchange with practice, politics and science should send a strong signal for sustainability in the construction and infrastructure sector.</p>

	<p>Alexia finished her doctoral thesis "Moment Resistant Joints for Timber Frames" with Distinction!</p>
<p>Her dissertation proposes and discusses a novel type of moment-resisting joint for timber frames. The corner’s prismatic volume was made of high-strength reinforced concrete, bonded to both the timber beam and column in a composite joint. The research includes analytical, experimental, and numerical studies, focusing on bending strength, stiffness, and failure modes of this innovative joint. From the mechanical model, based on assumed stress-strain relations with elastoplastic characteristics, design equations have been derived to describe the ductile behavior of the moment resistant joint.</p>
<p>The final dissertation has been approved on July 19, 2024. Thank you for the fascinating insights in your research and to the Supervisors João Negrão and Alfredo Dias.</p>

	<p>The project idea combines the natural building material bamboo, which has a fast growth rate and an excellent carbon dioxide storage capacity, with a prefabricated construction in a sustainable product. Through the cooperative development of a prefabricated and demountable connection, previous research results on round wood are transferred to the material bamboo. The prefabricated part of the connection also enables outdoor use, e.g. for load-bearing structures. The high degree of prefabrication of our material-appropriate connection technology enables worldwide use, even in structurally weak regions.</p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">Innovation inspired by nature: </span>Our innovative technology for the renewable raw material bamboo creates another piece for achieving the climate policy goals of the construction industry on the way to carbon neutrality and material transition. We would like to thank our project partner MFSA for their continuous and long-standing support over the past ten years. And yes, we are happy that we have caught the fish together in a few minutes.</p>

<p>In July 2023, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) published the DATIpilot funding programme. The DATIpilot aims to simplify and accelerate funding processes. Additionally, it serves as a field for experimentation and provides learnings and ideas for the German Agency for Transfer and Innovation (DATI), which is currently being set up. A total of 300 Innovation Sprints are being funded. At the DATIpilot roadshow between November 2023 and February 2024, nearly 600 projects presented their ideas in five-minute pitches. At each of the 23 events, the participants themselves peer-voted which projects should receive funding. In this way, 153 Innovation Sprints have been funded.</p>

	<p>The Australian Organising Committee invites delegates from around the world to join the <a href="https://www.wcte2025.org/event/df0d5655-c16d-47df-b4a6-457a7dc63d96/summary">World Conference on Timber Engineering 2025</a> (WCTE 2025) in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia from 22 June 2025 to 26 June 2025.</p>
<p>The WCTE is the world’s leading scientific forum for the presentation of the latest technical and architectural solutions and innovations in timber construction. It is considered the most prestigious international event in the field of timber technology for construction, timber structures, and the design of timber architecture.</p>
<p>Professor Keith Crews is the Chair of WCTE 2025 and is also the Director of the Australian Research Council (ARC), Industrial Transformation Research Hub to Advance Timber for Australia’s Future Built Environment (<a href="https://www.advance-timber-hub.org">ARC Advance Timber Hub</a>) which is administered by The University of Queensland. The University of Queensland, along with the support of the ARC Advance Timber Hub, has the pleasure of hosting the WCTE 2025. They are also supported by, the Queensland Government through Tourism &amp; Events Queensland, the Brisbane Economic Development Agency and Tourism Australia.</p>

	<p>In the spirit of practice-oriented teaching, the <a href="https://holzbauforschung-mainz.de/our-team/schober/">Chair of Timber Engineering and Building Construction</a> at <a href="https://www.hs-mainz.de/en/">Mainz University of Applied Sciences</a>, and <a href="https://www.rothoblaas.de/">Rothoblaas srl</a> offered a practical workshop on connection technology in multi-storey timber construction for students. In the first part of the workshop, the students of the Timber Construction class in the <a href="https://www.hs-mainz.de/en/academics/degree-programs/engineering/civil-engineering-renovation-meng/overview/">Master's degree program in Civil Engineering</a> were informed about the current status of the development of various connection solutions in timber engineering, especially in the field of mass timber buildings by Jonathan Fries. They were then able to see for themselves how easy the SPIDER connector is to install. <a href="https://holzbauforschung-mainz.de/our-team/bender/">Tom Bender</a> and <a href="https://holzbauforschung-mainz.de/our-team/pinger/">Christian Pinger</a>, research associates at <a href="https://holzbauforschung-mainz.de">Holzbauforschung Mainz</a>, prepared a cross-laminated timber ceiling element, produced by <a href="https://www.eugen-decker.de/en/">Eugen Decker Holzbau KG</a>, Morbach, Rhineland-Palatinate, using a hand-held CNC router so that the students could install the SPIDER in the correct position with form-fit.</p>

	<p>The practical experience days for the team of the timber research group were a complete success and we had an eventful week in the Black Forest near the Swiss border. Many thanks to all organizers and participants from the <a href="https://www.hs-mainz.de/en/">Mainz University of Applied Sciences</a> and the team from <a href="https://holzbauforschung-mainz.de/our-team/">Holzbauforschung Mainz</a>, especially to Stefan Kudermann from <a href="https://www.zentrum-holzbau.de/">Zentrum Holzbau Schwarzwald gGmbH</a> and Bernhard Tritschler from <a href="https://www.holzbau-amann.de/">Holzbau Amann GmbH</a>.</p>
<p>Praxistage.Holz are an event series where students, apprentices, and educators in the field of timber construction and wood design meet with companies involved in wood processing across Europe. These practical days offer insights into innovative wood processing techniques and hands-on exercises related to the material of wood. The 2024 Wood Practical Days will be held at the <a href="https://www.zentrum-holzbau.de/">Zentrum Holzbau Schwarzwald</a> and are planned for the week of September 23rd to 27th, 2024.</p>
<p>Participants can expect a diverse program:</p>
<ul>
<li>Forest Excursion: An excursion to the forest for a better understanding of the raw material wood,</li>
<li>Company Visits: Insights into production processes and workflows at wood-processing companies,</li>
<li>Hands-on Workshops: Participants can experience timber construction up close and get actively involved,</li>
<li>Lectures: From tree felling to finished structures. The presentations covering the entire forest supply chain.</li>

	<p>The Holzbauforschung Mainz and their partners made an active contribution to climate protection with the development of unused building material resources by upgrading a "problematic" hardwood range. The interdisciplinary team with different research focuses has set themselves a common goal: the development and provision of new raw material sources for high-quality building products in structural timber construction as part of the sustainable forest management and ecological forest conversion.</p>
<p>Forests cover a third of Germany's land area. They are valuable ecosystems, recreational areas and important suppliers of raw materials at the same time. Global warming is also affecting the forest ecosystem. Extreme weather events are already leaving clear traces. Increasing dry periods and extreme weather are affecting the stability, vitality and performance of the forest. In order for the forest to be able to provide its diverse ecosystem services such as wood production, filtering and storing groundwater, storing carbon and preserving biodiversity, management must be sustainable. By establishing the Forest Climate Fund, the Federal Government was underlining the importance of our forest ecosystems and the positive effects of sustainable forest management and wood use on climate protection.</p>
<p>The <a href="https://holzbauforschung-mainz.de/">Holzbauforschung Mainz</a> is also making an active contribution to this together with its partners as part of the joint research project <em>GreenOakBuilding</em>. In this project, an interdisciplinary team of scientists with their different research focuses on <a href="https://www.fva-bw.de/en/top-meta-navigation/departments/forest-utilisation">forest utilization and wood physics</a>, <a href="https://www.hochschule-trier.de/en/gestaltung/reasearch-and-projects/research/holzkompetenzzentrum">construction and digital construction</a> as well as <a href="https://holzbauforschung-mainz.de/">wood-hybrid construction and wood mechanics</a> have set themselves a common goal: the development and provision of new raw material sources for high-quality building products in structural timber construction as part of the sustainable management of our native forests and ecological forest conversion.</p>
<p>These resources include small-diameter logs from oak, which are economically uninteresting for the rapidly growing construction sector due to its growth characteristics and long rotation period until harvest. By combining traditional processes and knowledge of the forestry and carpentry trades with the latest results of component and material research, from field studies to non-destructive component testing with optical measurement value recognition to the validation of results from X-ray volume tomography, these previously unused hardwood assortments receive an "upgrade" to a sought-after renewable raw material via their digital twin and form an environmentally friendly, carbondioxide-storing and resource-saving alternative to the dominant mineral or metallic building materials. For test and demonstration purposes, a reference building in the form of a hall that can be used for forestry purposes has being built. The findings obtained will be checked and validated on the demonstration object. This is intended to create the basis for the use of small oak wood or similar assortments for higher-quality use in the construction sector in order to introduce the previously hardly used and problematic raw wood assortments to a multi-stage cascade use.</p>
<p>Today, it is in line with the ecological understanding of many people to use resources as efficiently as possible. This understanding is also the basis of the joint research project <em>GreenOakBuilding</em>. According to the 2020 logging statistics, a fifth of the timber harvest was either thermally recycled or not recycled at all. This also includes the "problematic" assortment examined here. Half of the total logging was carried out as damaged timber. The effects of climate change with long dry periods in previous years favored the rapid spread of the bark beetle with massive damage mainly to Norway spruce, Nordman fir and Douglas fir. One goal of ecological forest conversion is therefore to mix coniferous forest cultures with more resistant hardwood species. Perhaps the interdisciplinary research project<em> GreenOakBuilding can </em>make a small contribution here by using the necessary increase in the number of climate-resilient hardwood assortments sustainably in the coming decades and using modern classification methods as part of forest management to ensure long-term and high-quality use in construction.</p>

With a simple slat profile, an atmospherically dense interior is created, which is constructed entirely in wood. Later degradability and thus a closed material cycle contribute to the sensible use of the resources used.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 16px;">The project, which exemplifies the possibilities and potentials of timber construction, was created in an interdisciplinary project in timber  design and construction in cooperation with the <a href="https://www.mpip-mainz.mpg.de/en/landfester">Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research</a> (Department Physical Chemistry of Polymers, Prof. Katharina Landfester), </span><span style="font-size: 16px;">in which students of architecture and civil engineering took part under the supervision of <a href="https://www.hs-mainz.de/en/directory/gero-quasten/">Prof. Gero Quasten</a> (Department of Architecture, Chair of Design and Energy-Optimized Construction) and <a href="https://www.hs-mainz.de/en/directory/kay-uwe-schober/">Prof. Kay-Uwe Schober</a> (Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Chair of Timber Engineering and Building Construction). </span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 16px;">The task was to design a station for the Polymer Path, which imparts knowledge about the history, use and properties of polymers and also includes artistic objects. </span><span style="font-size: 16px;">The project was funded by the Mainz University of Applied Sciences, the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research and the Mainz Science Alliance and can be visited on the Polymer Path parallel to Koblenzer Straße in Mainz.</span></p>
