FINBAU 2024 - BAU meets LUX exhibition.

Meeting point for innovation and sustainability: The LUX - Pavilion of Mainz University of Applied Sciences, Ludwigstrasse 2 in Mainz is showcase for ongoing and planned research projects that offer exciting insights and innovative approaches to the sustainable construction and operation of real estate and infrastructure. The Department of Civil Environmental Engineering presents from October 31 till November 8, 2024 research projects in this exhibition and offers a diverse program of events that highlights future-oriented developments in the real estate and infrastructure sectors.

The action week “BAU meets LUX” focuses on the topics of “Sustainable construction and operation of real estate and infrastructure”. The title of the accompanying exhibition, FINBAU 2024 - Research Initiative for Sustainable Construction, is more than just a motto - it symbolizes the university's commitment to an environmentally friendly future. The exchange with practice, politics and science should send a strong signal for sustainability in the construction and infrastructure sector.

Winner of the DATIpilot Innovation Sprint

Start-up project BambooJoint directed by Prof. Dr. Kay-Uwe Schober wins the DATIpilot Innovation Competition of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

The project idea combines the natural building material bamboo, which has a fast growth rate and an excellent carbon dioxide storage capacity, with a prefabricated construction in a sustainable product. Through the cooperative development of a prefabricated and demountable connection, previous research results on round wood are transferred to the material bamboo. The prefabricated part of the connection also enables outdoor use, e.g. for load-bearing structures. The high degree of prefabrication of our material-appropriate connection technology enables worldwide use, even in structurally weak regions.

Innovation inspired by nature: Our innovative technology for the renewable raw material bamboo creates another piece for achieving the climate policy goals of the construction industry on the way to carbon neutrality and material transition. We would like to thank our project partner MFSA for their continuous and long-standing support over the past ten years. And yes, we are happy that we have caught the fish together in a few minutes.

In July 2023, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) published the DATIpilot funding programme. The DATIpilot aims to simplify and accelerate funding processes. Additionally, it serves as a field for experimentation and provides learnings and ideas for the German Agency for Transfer and Innovation (DATI), which is currently being set up. A total of 300 Innovation Sprints are being funded. At the DATIpilot roadshow between November 2023 and February 2024, nearly 600 projects presented their ideas in five-minute pitches. At each of the 23 events, the participants themselves peer-voted which projects should receive funding. In this way, 153 Innovation Sprints have been funded.

World Conference on Timber Engineering 2025

WCTE 2025 goes to Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.

The Australian Organising Committee invites delegates from around the world to join the World Conference on Timber Engineering 2025 (WCTE 2025) in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia from 22 June 2025 to 26 June 2025.

The WCTE is the world’s leading scientific forum for the presentation of the latest technical and architectural solutions and innovations in timber construction. It is considered the most prestigious international event in the field of timber technology for construction, timber structures, and the design of timber architecture.

Professor Keith Crews is the Chair of WCTE 2025 and is also the Director of the Australian Research Council (ARC), Industrial Transformation Research Hub to Advance Timber for Australia’s Future Built Environment (ARC Advance Timber Hub) which is administered by The University of Queensland. The University of Queensland, along with the support of the ARC Advance Timber Hub, has the pleasure of hosting the WCTE 2025. They are also supported by, the Queensland Government through Tourism & Events Queensland, the Brisbane Economic Development Agency and Tourism Australia.

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS

The WCTE 2025 Conference Committee invites authors to submit 2-page abstracts / mini papers for review by the WCTE 2025 International Scientific Committee. Submissions are sought for both oral and poster presentations, which must address the principal conference theme of:

ADVANCING TIMBER FOR THE FUTURE BUILT ENVIRONMENT

The WCTE 2025 technical program will have a focus on the importance of research and development undertaken by the timber design and construction community in response to the increased demand from engineering and architectural firms, developers and investors, now emphasising timber engineering as a preferred solution for many projects.

Workshop Timber connections

Theory meets practice in timber education.

In the spirit of practice-oriented teaching, the Chair of Timber Engineering and Building Construction at Mainz University of Applied Sciences, and Rothoblaas srl offered a practical workshop on connection technology in multi-storey timber construction for students. In the first part of the workshop, the students of the Timber Construction class in the Master's degree program in Civil Engineering were informed about the current status of the development of various connection solutions in timber engineering, especially in the field of mass timber buildings by Jonathan Fries. They were then able to see for themselves how easy the SPIDER connector is to install. Tom Bender and Christian Pinger, research associates at Holzbauforschung Mainz, prepared a cross-laminated timber ceiling element, produced by Eugen Decker Holzbau KG, Morbach, Rhineland-Palatinate, using a hand-held CNC router so that the students could install the SPIDER in the correct position with form-fit.

Practical experience days in the Black Forest

Team building with practical experiences in wood and forestry in St. Blasien.

The practical experience days for the team of the timber research group were a complete success and we had an eventful week in the Black Forest near the Swiss border. Many thanks to all organizers and participants from the Mainz University of Applied Sciences and the team from Holzbauforschung Mainz, especially to Stefan Kudermann from Zentrum Holzbau Schwarzwald gGmbH and Bernhard Tritschler from Holzbau Amann GmbH.

Praxistage.Holz are an event series where students, apprentices, and educators in the field of timber construction and wood design meet with companies involved in wood processing across Europe. These practical days offer insights into innovative wood processing techniques and hands-on exercises related to the material of wood. The 2024 Wood Practical Days will be held at the Zentrum Holzbau Schwarzwald and are planned for the week of September 23rd to 27th, 2024.

Participants can expect a diverse program:

Forest Excursion: An excursion to the forest for a better understanding of the raw material wood,
Company Visits: Insights into production processes and workflows at wood-processing companies,
Hands-on Workshops: Participants can experience timber construction up close and get actively involved,
Lectures: From tree felling to finished structures. The presentations covering the entire forest supply chain.

Polymer Path

As part of the opening of the Polymer Path at the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research, the winning design wowood by Esther Savelyev, Joana Ferreira, Jana Schmidt and Lara Fahroß has been awarded on September 3, 2021.

Winning project "wowood" by Esther Savelyev, Joana Ferreira, Jana Schmidt, Lara Fahroß.

The design impresses with its simplicity and high spatial quality. With a simple slat profile, an atmospherically dense interior is created, which is constructed entirely in wood. Later degradability and thus a closed material cycle contribute to the sensible use of the resources used.

The project, which exemplifies the possibilities and potentials of timber construction, was created in an interdisciplinary project in timber design and construction in cooperation with the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research (Department Physical Chemistry of Polymers, Prof. Katharina Landfester), in which students of architecture and civil engineering took part under the supervision of Prof. Gero Quasten (Department of Architecture, Chair of Design and Energy-Optimized Construction) and Prof. Kay-Uwe Schober (Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Chair of Timber Engineering and Building Construction).

The task was to design a station for the Polymer Path, which imparts knowledge about the history, use and properties of polymers and also includes artistic objects. The project was funded by the Mainz University of Applied Sciences, the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research and the Mainz Science Alliance and can be visited on the Polymer Path parallel to Koblenzer Straße in Mainz.

Whatever the weather, the students and helpers from lignum hoch drei stood on the path and joined forces to build the four meter high, extremely complex structure in the middle of the other exhibits.
